Alex Rios: A Name to Remember

With the way the Yankees have been playing, most recently being swept by the Orioles this weekend, all options should and will be pursued. One that has not gotten as much play is Alex Rios, yes, I know he's an outfielder and once Granderson comes back, the outfield won't be the problem. Think of it this way though, he's another righty bat with power. He hit .304, 25 home runs and 91 RBI's last season, and is at that same pace this season, hitting .270, 11 home runs and 36 RBI's on a bad team. The other point I want to bring up is he still can run, he has 14 stolen bases and the league leader has 20. Brett Gardner only has 11. He brings an element the Yankees don't usually have even with Gardner. Now as for what you would have to give up is the question. I'm not exactly sure, he is on the books for two years after this season so if the Yankees take his contract and don't make the White Sox take any of it, they could give up less for him. Plus the White Sox are shopping everyone outside of Chris Sale and Paul Konerko, which could me a trade for Rios and SS Alexei Ramirez. No one knows how well Jeter, if he can even come back, will play at SS. So Ramirez is always an option as well. Stay Tuned for updates and other rumors I can think up.Follow me on Twitter @thedonnyfinkle

How the word cumquat could help you win a book...

Sometimes I like books that are just a gob-smackingly good read - with luscious language, pace and a plot so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel. The ones that make you feel like 'I didn't really know reading satisfaction, until I read this book.' Sometimes I like books that make me think, challenge my preconceptions and tie my brain in useful kinds of knots, like some metaphorical, metaphysical macrame pot plant holder. But my most favourite books are the ones that are the former, with the latter secretly hidden inside. The entertainy, learny kind all rolled into one 'oh-my-goodness-I am-so-devastated-it-is-over-how-will-I-live-without-it-but-look-how-much-smarter-I-am-about-the-world-now' package. These are the books that you want to un-remember so you can read them for the first time again ... and again.I like to try and write books that make people think. That aren't just superficial and glossy but have some kind of greater meaning or examination of universal themes or revelation of some useful truths, or ideas that people can take away and use in their own lives. Sometimes I think I get there, sometimes I almost get there: but it is always the goal. Words are a powerful medium. And with power comes great responsibility. A book is one of the safest ways to venture outside your comfort zone. To gain an insight in to the lives of others. And it is my job to put it in an entertainy, learny package that makes you put it back on your book pile to read again.Authors work very hard to draw the reader in. To help them see what the author sees. The brilliant Maggie Stiefvater explains it well here. And shows exactly why some books need more than one reading to get the most out of them. And because I now have a total of 40 followers I am going to have a competition. You can win any one of my books (except the first one, Clever Moo) in print, or where available, in a digital format if you prefer. Enter by commenting on this post with the title of the book you would like to win and with your favourite word (no swears please). I will pick my favourite of your favourite words as the winner. For example 'phalanges' is quite an amazing word, or 'cumquat'. The competition will close on Friday.

“Star Witness” Rachel “That’s a Retarted Question” Jeantel was Just Excused (George Zimmerman Trial, Day 4)

Rachel Jeantel testifying yesterdayBy Nicholas StixShe’s not done, however. The prosecution said it’s done with her, but the defense reserved the right to recall her, and Judge Debra Nelson instructed her that she is still under subpoena.HLN “expert” defense attorney Darren Kavinoka had said that it was crucial to the defense that Jeantel remain under the court’s jurisdiction (subpoena), because otherwise the defense would have to re-subpoena her, in order to have her re-appear, and in the meantime she could have left the country. Is There A Doc In The House?

Is There A Doc In The House?Boston Celtics fans have enjoyed the benefits of having Doc Rivers as their Head Coach for the last decade, during his run he brought the organization another Championship and energized the Celtics pride once more. All this talk about him possibly going to another team has fans wondering is there a Doc in the house? Things have heated up between the Celtics and Doc because of the ongoing dialog between Doc and the Los Angeles Clippers. What started out as just whispers around the league as just speculation has become full blown negotiation, including talk of future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett as a possible piece of the puzzle.Doc Rivers with Kevin GarnettSay It Isn't So! courtesy of Group CSEBoston General Manager Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers have enjoyed a great relationship over the years publicly, one can only speculate this situation could put a strain on the two mens friendship and jeopardize any possible return of Doc Rivers as Head Coach... As for the reports of him going to the Clippers as their Head Coach it would be great for the fans in LA. The Clippers have a great team of young talent that could use a Coach with Doc's experience, its no wonder why Clipper fans are hoping there is a Doc in the house!81610562_crop_340x234Good Times, courtesy of Bleacher ReportIs there a Doc in the house? Currently Doc Rivers remains the acting Head Coach of the Boston Celtics but as the drama continues to boil you wonder if the Celtics will draw a line in the sand or fire him. This situation is very interesting because Doc is a very good Head Coach so you wonder if they do fire him what would be the reason? Has there been things developing behind the scene that we haven't been privy too? Like most things we will soon find out, the media will dig up all the dirt there is! Personally speaking I think Doc Rivers is perfect for the job with the LA Clippers, he's a well spoken media savvy guy that will take the Clippers more mainstream! Is There A Doc In The House? Clipper Fans Want To Know... If Doc Rivers ends up Coaching the Clippers there's one thing for sure, you'll see the Clippers in prime time a lot more then you ever have in the past! Anybody Want To Ask A Question Thursday Night

It's relatively clear where the preponderance of the State Delegation representing Prince William County stand with regard to the Bi-County Parkway, particularly as has been evidenced by the attendance and statements at several meetings held locally and in Richmond.  What is not so clear is where the Loudoun delegation stands and given their votes on the Transportation Bill last session, I would suggest they may not be opposed to the Bi-County Parkway.  That being said, one has to wonder whether they will attend Thursday night's VDOT presentation at Creighton's Corner Elementary School and let their positions be known. Should they chose to attend perhaps one of the more hardy souls in the crowd should ask them about the campaign contributions they have reported in 2013 alone and how those contributions relate to their votes in favor of the Transportation Bill and whether or not those contributions will "influence" their position with regard to the Bi-County Parkway.  Here's some select data to look at.Joe May Campaign Contributions 2013$15,000 Majority Leader PAC $10,000 Commonwealth Transportation PAC $7,500 Nova Technology Council $5,000 Howell for Delegate - William $5,000 Va Transportation Construction Alliance $2,500 John T "Til" Hazel, Jr $2,000 Transurban USA Inc $1,250 Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce $1,250 Nova Building Industry Assn $1,000 Associated Builders & Contractors - Va Chapter $1,000 Associated General Contractors $1,000 Dewberry & Davis $1,000 Northern Virginia Assn of Realtors $1,000 Old Dominion Highway Contractors Assn $1,000 Parsons Brinckerhoff $1,000 Toll Road Investors Partnership II $1,000 Va Assn of Realtors $1,000 Va Trucking Assn Total $58,500Tom Rust Campaign Contributions 2013$10,000 Sidney O Dewberry $10,000 John T "Til" Hazel, Jr $5,000 Eleanor C Hazel $5,000 Majority Leader PAC $5,000 Nova Technology Council Herndon$2,000 Northern Virginia Assn of Realtors $2,000 Nova Building Industry Assn $1,000 Home Builders Assn of Va $1,000 MC Dean Building Intelligence Inc $1,000 Gary D Rappaport $1,000 Va Assn of Realtors Total $43,000Tag Greason Campaign Contributions 2013$10,000 Commonwealth Transportation PAC $4,472 Va Assn of Realtors $2,500 Majority Leader PAC $2,500 Nova Technology Council $2,300 Northern Virginia Assn of Realtors $2,000 Toll Road Investors Partnership II Total $23,772

Mickey, Willie, and Everyone Else: A Conversation with Allen Barra

Allen Barra's new book is about Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, and their relationship with each other, and everyone else.MAY 16, 2013 - 2:09PM | BY DAVID DAVIShttp://theclassical.orgIn "Mickey and Willie: Mantle and Mays, the Parallel Lives of Baseball's Golden Age" (Crown Archetype), the veteran author-journalist Allen Barra examines the mythic stature of two of the greatest center-fielders to play the game. The book is also a personal exodus of sorts, as Barra attempts to untangle the complex emotions he has about two childhood heroes."Mickey and Willie – they were given boys' names that they never grew out of," he writes. "The private lives of both men revealed that they were ill equipped for life after baseball, a fact that those of us who loved them found almost impossible to understand. How, though, could we have understood?"I emailed questions to Barra about writing and "Mickey and Willie," and he replied from his home in New Jersey. You helped Marvin Miller write his memoirs, entitled "A Whole Different Ball Game." What was it like to work with Marvin Miller? It was an education. I thought I knew enough to write a book on the business of baseball and the ongoing strife between the owners and the baseball union. I was amazed at how much I didn’t know. In the course of doing the book, I think I came to think a little like Marvin. That’s a gift I’ll always be grateful for.Do you think that Marvin Miller will ever be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame? No, I don’t. If the players had stood up and demanded it, which they should have done, it would have happened. It is, after all, their Hall of Fame. But they didn’t. Anyway, Marvin was adamant he didn’t want in and stated so in several public letters. One of the last things he said to me was to please make that clear to anyone still calling for him to be elected.  So now the HOF can’t induct him without embarrassing themselves. It's been said that "all biography is at last autobiography." As the author of biographies about Paul "Bear" Bryant, Yogi Berra and now Mantle and Mays, do you find that statement to be true? How do you, as a writer, approach biography?Well, if all biography is autobiography, then I coached Alabama to six national championships and won ten World Series rings with the Yankees. Nope on that.I approach biography – and in this category I'll put Wyatt Earp, Bear Bryant and Yogi Berra – as men about whom much had been written but about whom I had never read what I wanted to read about them. There were too many unanswered questions, and that’s why I wrote those books. I don’t regard "Mickey and Willie" as biography. As the subtitle says, it’s a “parallel lives.” I was fascinated by the many things about them that were both similar and different. They were the same age, both children of the Depression, both southerners, both raised by baseball fathers and nurtured by the industrial league culture that thrived until a couple of years after World War II. They came to the Major Leagues in the same city and played against each other in the World Series in their rookie year, 1951. They ended up playing the same position, center field, and both were great all-around players. They both had actual names that others thought were nicknames, boys’ names. They were both booed by fans for not being Joe DiMaggio. Both loved going to the movies, especially westerns. As for the opposites – well, of course, one was white and one was black, so they lived most of their lives on different sides of American culture. There have been quite a few books about Mantle and Mays, including most recently James Hirsch's exhaustive biography of Mays and Jane Leavy's personal reportage about Mantle. Why did you feel there was room for another book about Mantle and Mays? What did you feel had not been discussed in previous works? All previous books, whether about them or ghosted by them, left out pretty much one element: each other. The similarities I mentioned above were seldom discussed except in passing. I never read anything, for instance, about Mickey and Willie barnstorming together, or about the many commercials and endorsements they did. (Thank you, George Lois.) Or, that Mickey was envious of Willie’s salary while Willie was envious of Mickey’s endorsements. In the end, each liked and respected the other enormously. They were compared endlessly. When I was growing up, “Who's better, Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays?” was practically the only baseball question that mattered. I think that’s largely forgotten today. You've written that "Mickey and Willie" is, at heart, about the concept of hero worship. What did you discover about that in researching and writing this book? Knowing what we know now, are Mantle and Mays still deserving of hero status? What I learned was that in their private lives they were at least as flawed as I am. That makes me feel both better and worse. I suppose the thing I learned that impressed me most is that being someone’s hero imposes an enormous burden of dreams on someone. But, finally, were they worthy of being called heroes? Yes, I think they were. I’ll give them that. Being my hero was a tough job, but in the end they did okay. You write that, after all these years, Willie Mays remains a cipher. Why? What happened to him?I don’t know that anything “happened” to him except everything he went through his whole life. After reading everything that has ever been written about Willie Mays, I can’t say I know him any better than I did before I started, at least in the sense of “What is the inner man really like? What were his dreams outside baseball, his aspirations?” What made me feel that more than anything else was that the two men who knew him best from the time he hit the major leagues, [authors] Arnold Hano and the late Charlie Einstein, were also baffled by him. You're a general manager in the spring of 1950. You have the choice of taking one ballplayer for your team: Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. Who do you take and why?Well, I take Mickey for two simple reasons. In 1950 I don’t know what his history of injury is going to be, but I do know he’s white. It’s that simple. What I’m saying is that if I were a general manager in 1950, I don’t know that I would have thought differently than GMs did back then. From the perspective of ability, I don’t know that there was anything to make me choose one over the other. What's the subject of your next book?I’m not sure yet. I would love to write a dual biography of Ed and his late son Steve Sabol – how they built NFL Films and changed the way we look at sports. I also have been researching for years a book on how an Italian, a Jew, and an Irishman – Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Owney Madden – created the modern mob.David Davis is a contributing writer at Los Angeles Magazine. Song Reviews - Edge of a Broken Heart by Vixen

Warning - I'm about to admit to liking something that I should probably hate. Long before I even attempted this blog, I was making fun of bad music videos and bad music, and one of my favorite punching bags was the mid-eighties all-girl pop/metal band, Vixen. It's sort of hard to see why, considering that nobody remembers them, but I can explain it, I think.I recently got to thinking about why I chose to make fun of this briefly moderately successful and largely forgotten band. Is it because they’re all women? Absolutely not. I happen to like The Runaways and Girlschool, and they were both all-girl rock bands. Is it because they were a pop band? Hardly. I’m a huge fan of power pop, and this isn’t far off from mid and late eighties power pop bands like Enuff Z’Nuff and the latter day Cheap Trick, both bands that I like.Is it because Edge of a Broken Heart sucks? No, actually. I’ve recently been able to admit to myself that I kind of like this song, to my eternal shame. It’s a guilty pleasure. And that's the reason - I couldn't admit to myself that I actually liked this, so I listened to it and made mean jokes about it.I can also admit that these girls aren’t bad musicians. The singer has a good voice and if she let herself go a little more, she’d be very enjoyable to listen to. The instrumentalists aren’t bad, either. They aren’t extraordinary, at least as far as I can hear, but they’re a tight, professional unit. I love the guitar riff and the guitar solo here is quite good, and the bassline is noticeable, which is a plus – there aren’t enough good bass parts in rock music, and I always appreciate being able to say anything about the way a bass is played in a song. The only problem I have with Vixen is that they’re bland. There’s no personality to this. I’m wondering if their handlers at the record label had them tone it down so as not to threaten their potential, largely male audience. It’s a possibility, and it’s unfortunate. Apparently, they were veterans on the Sunset Strip club scene for a long time before they got a record deal.Admittedly, there’s also the possibility that they would have just been another lame hair metal band if given the chance to do what they wanted to. In fact, it’s probably pretty likely. But it’s a shame that they weren’t given the same chances as their male counterparts to make crappy music. At the very least, they would have stood out amongst the crowd of mediocrity. That’s not necessarily a good thing, but it’s something, I guess. And yes, I know that this song was co-written by Richard Marx. I can't stand that guy. The other writer? Fee Waybill from The Tubes. If you know anything about The Tubes, that's kind of shocking and not surprising at all both at once. Do yourself a favor and click that link. That's The Tubes. You're welcome.
