Tornadoes & Oklahoma

Our part of the world is not a part of "Tornado Alley", the swath of real estate across the South and the Southern Plains where tornadoes most commonly develop.  Oklahoma is one of the hubs of severe weather nationally and tornadoes are a way of life in this part of the world. The Oklahoma City area, in particular, is one of the most severe weather prone areas on earth according to climatology, with an average year featuring 56 tornadoes within 140 miles of Oklahoma City.  This is not even including the average of 629 hail reports EACH year in this part of the world.Difference between Philadelphia (left) and Oklahoma City (right) in terms of severe weather events  between 1980 & 2006. Source: NOAA.Oklahoma may arguably be the nation's severe weather capital in concentration of severe weather outbreaks, due in large part to its geographic location in the Plains.   Moist air is easily accessible from the Gulf of Mexico. This clashes with dry air advancing in off of the Rockies, leading to the development of a moisture boundary known as a dry line.  The dry line separates the humid heat that bubbles north from the Gulf with the dry heat of New Mexico and West Texas, typically the firing line for the nastiest of storms.  The high numbers that are to the east of the dry line/warm front on the graphic below signify "CAPE" -- convective available potential energy -- the amount of juice in the atmosphere for storms to fire.  The higher the number, the more ripe the environment.Adding to this a strong batch of winds in the mid atmosphere and a cold air push from the north and the stage is set for a severe weather outbreak in the Plains.  Such events occur more frequently in the Plains, thanks in large part to the infusion of dry air to create a sharp boundary upon which storms can develop. While severe weather certainly does occur here, the general threat levels for severe weather are much lower than it is across the Plains and South at this time of the year.  Our peak for severe is typically from late June into July as the temperature differential between inland and the Atlantic Ocean lessens (thanks to the Atlantic's warming trend that carries into the summer).  However, our risk for severe is not on the order of what Oklahomans typically deal with each May.

London attack mirrors plot to behead Muslim soldier - CNN International

London (CNN) -- The victim of Wednesday's attack in southeast London is believed to be a serving soldier, based at a barracks in Woolwich, Nick Raynsford, a member of Parliament, told CNN.

Details are still emerging of the attack, which is being treated by the UK government as suspected terrorism, but in recent years previous Islamist plots have targeted British soldiers on home soil.

In 2007 four men were imprisoned over a plot to kidnap and kill a British Muslim soldier on leave and behead him in a Birmingham garage. The group's ringleader Parviz Khan intended to behead the soldier "like a pig" and release footage of the killing on the internet.

Khan was later imprisoned for life and must serve a minimum of 14 years before he will be considered for release. Three other men, Basiru Gassama, Mohammed Irfan, and Hamid Elasmar, were handed down sentences of between two and seven years for their roles in the plot.

High Court judge Mr Justice Henriques said Khan's aim was to deter any Muslim from joining the British army.

"So rampant are your views, so excitable your temperament, so persuasive your tongue and so imbued with energy are you, it's quite impossible to predict when, if ever, it will be safe for you to be released into the public," the Guardian quoted the judge as saying.

"It was a plot whose purpose was to undermine democratic government, to demoralize the British army and to destabilize recruitment, and to cause anguish to the then prime minister of the day and the loyal citizens of the country," the judge said.

Prosecutors said Khan hoped to kidnap the Muslim soldier in Birmingham's Broad Street entertainment quarter with the help of drug dealers.

This is not the only recent example of serving soldiers being the targets of terrorist attacks. Last month three British-born men were imprisoned for between four and nine years for preparing acts of terrorism. The men, who pleaded guilty had discussed targeting Royal Wootton Bassett, a town that became a focal point for parades by UK troops returning from service in Afghanistan.

The judge, Mr. Justice Simon, said they had shown themselves to be "committed fundamentalists" ready to kill. Muslim convert Richard Dart, a former BBC security guard, and co-defandant Imran Mahmood had discussed how to make explosives, with the western English town as a potential bombing target.

Barbara walters daughter arrested

Barbara walters daughter arrested, Barbara Walters' daughter has been popped for driving under the influence in Naples, Fla., E! News confirms.Jacqueline Walters Danforth was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a misdemeanor DUI offense involving alcohol or drugs.According to the police report, officers responded to a call of an SUV parked on highway I-75 in the center lane, nearly causing other vehicles to nearly smash into the back of the vehicle. After they initiated a traffic stop, cops suspected the 44-year-old female driver, Danforth, and her male passenger appeared intoxicated.Per the report, after police helped the passenger out of the car and handcuffed him so he wouldn't stumble into traffic, Jacqueline allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and began shouting at the officers, forcing them to cuff her as well so she wouldn't stray on the highway. After Danforth refused to take a field sobriety test, she was placed under arrest.  A Breathalyzer later revealed she had 0.218, well above the Sunshine state's legal limit. She was booked, then released a few hours later after posting a $1,000 bail. But the legendary journalist previously revealed in her memoir that Danforth—whom she adopted in 1968 while married to her second husband, Lee Guber—had struggled with substance abuse in her teens and even ran away from home at one point. Things got so bad that Walters was forced to send Jacqueline away to an intervention program in Idaho to help her get clean. An arraignment date in Danforth's case is scheduled for June 12.

Dan's Pick of the Week: Trouble Will Find Me by The National

While most people this week are probably listening to Daft Punk’s new album with much praise, I’ll be busy celebrating the release of Trouble Will Find Me, the new album by The National, which has me rejoicing greatly. For their sixth release, the band has not sacrificed their strong lyrics for a quick indulging sound. Instead, the exact opposite has occurred: the music is more disjunct and the lyrics are deeper than ever. They are so deep that I had to listen to the album three times before I could even fathom the amount of intensity that is contained.      So what can one expect from The National? Over the course of their discography, the band has recorded with various musicians like Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent, and Richard Reed Parry. Their albums gradually became more orchestral to the point of being declared a chamber pop band. The music continues to grow larger in sound and instrumentation, but one thing that you will not find in The National’s music is a frequent use of synthesizers. The gradual transformation in their sound encourages the fans to keep coming back, but it also prevents them from getting scared off in the presence of some abrupt change (ex. Radiohead). Regarding the syncopated rhythms and various meters, the band has been leaning this way for some time. It is most present within the b-sides of their previous album, High Violet.     Trouble Will Find Me seems to have elements from the band’s past two albums, but overall it’s quite unique. Matt Berninger spills out the deepest parts of himself throughout this record to the point of questioning his own morality and intentions. His music seems to be a way in which he vents out all his inner conflicts which end up in the form of a story. This incorporates much lyrical continuity within the album that it would be impossible to separate any track from the listing. This is probably why Trouble Will Find Me is one of The National’s longest albums.      One thing that I have learned about all the band’s albums is that none of them can be taken lightly. They are like babies: They constantly need affection and your full attention. As ridiculous as it sounds, it is very true, especially when compared to a band like Daft Punk, where one could zone out while listening and still be able to appreciate the music. Everything keeps moving in Trouble Will Find Me, and one could easily miss out on some great lyrical moments.     There are some pretty rocking songs on this album, however. “Sea Of Love” would probably win the title, but I cannot forget songs like “Demons” and “Graceless”. “I Should Live In Salt” is the perfect album opener, which introduces the narrator’s struggles alongside an epic and inducing melody. “Don’t Swallow The Cap” is deeply emotional, containing many elements of death. “Slipped” sounds like it should be within the deep tracks of Boxer or High Violet. My favorite songs, however are the last four tracks of the album. “I Need My Girl” is an instant classic with its catchy lyrics and bitter tone. It acts as a “Runaway” of this album. “Humiliation” sounds like it starts the second track of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs; however, the rest of the music is quite unique. It tells a story of a night gone crazy, hence the humiliation. “Pink Rabbits” completes this album with the most beautiful melody and amazing lyrics. Matt Berninger sings, “Am I the one you think about when you sit in your faint chair drinking pink rabbits?”. The album closer is “Hard To Find” which is the ideal track to be placed at the end.     The National tends to build their albums up from beginning to end with the most intense music at the finish line. I greatly admire this technique and it has never failed to please me. Overall, The National is maintaining their reputation as a band with dark and passionate music alongside incredibly deep lyrics. Trouble Will Find Me does not disappoint!

Microsoft Discuss New Xbox As Cable Box Replacement

Posted: 21 May 2013 12:34 PM PDT

While the most important date in the history of the ‘new Xbox’ concept is today with the official console announcement, creators Microsoft are not letting the impending reveal detract them from other matters that could normally be cast off to the side for a while, such as the possibility of the console being used as a ‘home entertainment system’ as well its first and foremost priority as a games console.

xbox_revealFor this purpose, Microsoft are believed to be in talks with a number of cable TV operators, in order to replace their respective ‘set-top boxes’ with the new Xbox.

The way in which this would work would be online delivery of content (fitting if the rumours surrounding the new Xbox’s operational methods are to be believed), as opposed to the cables from which pay-tv gets its name, meaning  operators such as Time Warner about the possibility of delivering content through the web instead of traditional cable pipes, and would lead to a corporate ‘cord-cutting’ should any company take up Microsoft’s offer.

One currently being rumoured for such treatment is Time Warner, with the new Xbox’s ‘multimedia capabilities’ planned as a draw for executives to see the potential of using Xbox as the source of any new set-top box.

While it remains unlikely that any major provider would veer away from the status quo for such a huge risk, Microsoft are strong in their belief that their new product is more than just a ‘games console’, and have even avoided referring to it as such, as the Envisioneering Group’s Richard Doherty reported to Bloomberg, noting: “They might not even use the phrase game console this time around because they’re trying to pitch it as this incredible entertainment hub in the home.”

NPD analyst Liam Callahan, meanwhile, offered an opposing view, claiming that nothing will surpass what the Xbox is best known for amongst consumers, stating: “Those entertainment options are important – in a sense they are almost a given, but gamers won’t buy a next-generation console from Sony or Microsoft for that.”

Inside the company, meanwhile, the impending reveal has triggered a period of reflection on what the previous ‘generation’ of consoles delivered to the industry, with Microsoft’s former chief executive Peter Molyneux unsurprisingly claiming that the Xbox 360 was the most memorable ’7th-gen’ product compared to the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii. He summarised: “2013 is proving to be the year of the console hardware refresh. Although it’s exciting, it’s not nearly as exciting as when the Xbox 360 exploded onto the gaming scene just over seven years ago. Back then, the 360 represented a huge leap forward in gaming, with a tangible increase in performance and fantastic multiplayer support. Gamers and game-makers were justifiably super-excited. Now it is that time again, but the world has changed. Tablet, mobile PC and smartphone makers are refreshing their hardware on what feels like almost a weekly basis. And on the horizon looms Valve with its PC-based Steam Box. Thereby hangs the problem for Microsoft: how to justify its new console, how to get us all excited.”

They will attempt to begin that process in two parts, with today’s event primarily focused on the product’s hardware, with the E3 gameshow next month providing details on some of the launch games that could be seen whenever the console arrives. With this seeming to represent a focus on gaming for the time being, how much of a difference will the new Xbox truly be from its predecessor, and will those larger differences be likeable ones? ABC Ask Celebrities To Sing Their Face Off

Posted: 21 May 2013 09:14 AM PDT

While the title might imply a very Hollywood new-age botox removal process, American network ABC are instead looking at an unusual new addition to their summer programming line-up.

sing_your_face_off_logoThe format, which will see actor John Barrowman (Doctor Who) present, will take five celebrities each week undergoing a complete transformation into the same musical icon, replicating their mannerisms and voice and competing to find the best ‘replica’.

Based on an existing format in Spain from Endemol called Your Face Sounds Familiar (Tu cara me suena) that has been exported to over 20 countries, Sing Your Face Off will take on a six-episode run by the network, with current confirmed celebrity contestants (who will then have to impersonate another famous person) including actresses Lisa Rinna and China Anne McClain, comedian Jon Lovitz, and musician Sebastian Bach, amongst others.

The judging panel will so far consist of Debbie Gibson and Darrell Hammond, while it is also believed that the ’idol’ of the week being impersonated will have a key role to play, with challenge-setting, coaching, judging, and guest performing likely to be amongst the possible uses for such a singer.

The Hollywood Reporter noted of the planned show: “Each episode will feature the complete physical transformation — including the icon’s walk, talk, mannerisms and more — as the celebrities compete in front of judges and a studio audience. In addition to being tasked with a physical transformation, participating talent  also will have to actually perform music from their assigned icon each week. Participating celebs will transform to play — and sing — multiple musical performers during the series. Details on prizes still are being worked out.”

The official premiere date is currently unconfirmed, but in what will most likely be a barrage of celebrity suck-up speeches and tributes, will its target audiences find a better use for their summer than ‘another singing contest’, or could the mimic format become a breakout success for the network? If any lesson could be given to producers ahead of attempting this, it should be that it only gets really entertaining when you see the multiples on-stage at the same time:

HTC One Scales New Heights With Everest Video Call

Posted: 21 May 2013 02:48 AM PDT

Since ‘the tallest mountain’ and ‘the deepest sea’ are naturally referred to as some of the most isolated places on the planet, it can be near enough guaranteed that they are the locations with some of the worst mobile signal coverage, although the exemption to that rule is the literal former example (Mount Everest) and its status as a popular enough ‘destination’ to be able to support even the most data-heavy calls.

everest_million_htc_challengeThe concept was this week officially proven by Taiwanese company HTC, whose HTC One phone was used in the world’s first-ever ‘video call from the summit of Mount Everest’. At 8,848m above sea level, the call between charity climber Daniel Hughes and the BBC News team will not be surpassed as the highest (on solid ground at least), while temperatures of -35°C also ensured it would be one of the coldest locations for a web-chat.

Hughes, participating in a project for the UK’s Comic Relief fundraising drive, aimed to raise £1m through his ascent, and has been recording key moments of his journey through the HTC One and its ’Immarsa mobile satellite technology’ (where signal interference would naturally not be a problem for any satellite receivers to handle).

Much like astronauts in the 1970′s who had endless ideas to be able to accomplish ’first x on the moon’, Hughes also marked a number of ‘achievements’ that were unlikely to have been done before hand, performing ‘the world’s highest Harlem Shake’, and being the first to place a red nose (the symbol of Comic Relief) at the summit, which serves as a border between Nepal and Tibet (China).

Hughes explained his pride at his accomplishments, stating in the satellite interview: “This project has been two and a half years in the making and it’s hard to put into words how amazing and surreal it is to be speaking to London from the highest point in the world. The support for the expedition has been phenomenal and thanks to the interactive nature of the climb, I really felt like I had everyone behind me.”

A HTC spokesperson added from a safer location: “We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of design and innovation and the HTC One was put to the ultimate test in extreme conditions, where it was able to help Daniel connect to everyone back home – even from the top of the world. We’re truly proud to have been part of Daniel’s amazing journey.”

The ‘landmark phone call’ can be seen below, while supporters of his effort are encouraged to donate via the ‘Everest Millions‘ website. With the highest possible video chat (without being in a plane or in orbit) now complete, it is up to rivals such as Samsung, Apple, or Google to see HTC’s boast and raise it (or lower it, since ‘deepest call’ would have to be the most attainable record now)…

Ofcom Plan Live TV Subtitle Delay

Posted: 20 May 2013 01:57 PM PDT

UK media regulatory body Ofcom have recently proposed a shake-up to the way that live TV displays subtitles, claiming that a mandatory delay period could be a method implemented in order to lessen the possibility of error.

ofcom_bad_subtitlingThe system would be one only made to ‘improve the quality’ of the broadcasting service, with a several-second gap believed by the organisation to be enough time to make any necessary amendments such as the one pictured.

That example occurred in an episode of ITV chatshow Loose Women, which along with a caption from BBC Weather provided visible instances of errors made in this department.

The plans come after Ofcom reviewed the current system and asked for feedback from TV viewers, with the primary recommendations to emerge being that the ‘timing and accuracy’ of live show subtitles was questionable and needed to be fixed, including ‘words lagging behind voice’, ‘freezing’, and typos.

A summary statement from the regulator read: “Viewers have made clear that there are continuing problems with the speed, synchronisation, accuracy and presentation of live TV subtitling.”

Ofcom representative Claudio Pollack added: “Ofcom wants to see an improvement in the quality of subtitling on live programmes for people who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Our proposals will help identify the areas where broadcasters can make progress, leading to a better viewing experience over time.”

Although the implementation of subtitles by broadcasters is only formally required in the case of an ‘average viewing share’ of over 0.05% for its network, the demand is believed to be quite high, with 7.6m adults said to ‘actively use’ subtitles, though just 1.4m of them were classed as having a hearing impairment, so with its popularity extending far beyond necessity, is subtitling an issue that demands more respect than it currently receives for current live broadcasts?
